PORTUGAL
Aveiro
A lagoon city on the central coast, often called the Portuguese Venice for the canals of its Ria, with a fishing and salt-making heritage stretching back centuries. The Ria de Aveiro and the nearby Atlantic supplied the raw material for a local canning tradition. Comur, the Fábrica de Conservas da Murtosa, is the area's signature producer, known for vividly designed tins and a strong tourist-facing retail presence. Sardines and other small pelagics in olive oil are the principal products, and the Ria is historically renowned for its eels.
