MOROCCO
Morocco Atlantic Coast
Morocco's Atlantic seaboard, from Safi and Agadir southward, is the largest sardine fishery in the world and the source of most of the canned sardines traded globally. The cold Canary Current drives an upwelling that supports vast shoals of sardines, and the ports of Safi and Agadir grew into the heart of an industrial canning sector supplying brands worldwide. Producers and packers including Titus, Sultan, Alshark, Bogar, and others operate along this coast. Sardines in oil, tomato, and chermoula-spiced styles are the defining export.
