Joseph Nissim launched Rio Mare in 1965 from the Cermenate factory in Como, with a single insight: tuna had always been sold in large industrial tins by weight, but could be a household staple if offered in single-serving cans. The format was an immediate success. The Cermenate plant became the largest canned tuna production site in Europe. Rio Mare is now the number one canned fish brand in Italy and Europe, part of the Bolton Group.
