Launched in 1911 by Kawasho Foods Corporation, a Japanese trading company now operating as a subsidiary of JFE Shoji, Geisha is one of the oldest internationally distributed canned seafood brands in the world. The brand debuted with King Crabmeat and expanded into tuna, sardines, mackerel, clams, shrimp, and oysters over the following decades, with exports to the United States beginning in the 1920s and 1930s. Today the brand maintains a global distribution network spanning North America, West Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, with a particularly strong presence in Nigeria and Ghana where its canned mackerel in tomato sauce has become a fixture in local cuisine.
