Shishamo
Shishamo is a small, slender fish native to the Pacific coast of Hokkaido, Japan. Female shishamo carrying eggs are particularly prized, the roe-filled belly considered a delicacy. Closely related to capelin but distinct in both habitat and flavor, shishamo has been fished commercially in Hokkaido for centuries and remains a staple of Japanese cuisine, often grilled whole or canned.
