Tongol Tuna

Tongol tuna (Thunnus tonggol), also called longtail tuna, is a smaller tuna species found in coastal and shelf waters of the Indo-Pacific, from the Persian Gulf to Australia and Japan. It is rarely caught in the open ocean, preferring shallower coastal environments. The flesh is pale and mild, positioned between albacore and skipjack in colour and flavour. Tongol is commonly used in Southeast Asian canned tuna products and is the species behind many Thai-exported chunk light products. It is considered more sustainable than the larger ocean-going tuna species due to its smaller range and the nearshore fishing methods used to catch it.
