Jack Mackerel
Jack mackerel (Trachurus murphyi and related species) is one of the most commercially important pelagic fish in the South Pacific, supporting huge industrial fisheries off the coasts of Chile and Peru. The species is distinct from Atlantic mackerel despite the shared common name, belonging instead to the Carangidae family. Chilean jack mackerel sustains one of the world's largest single-species fisheries by volume, the majority of which goes into fishmeal and fish oil rather than human food. In tinned fish, jack mackerel from Chile and Peru appears in mass-market products across Latin America and developing markets globally. Distinct from the horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) of European conservas.
