A Pacific-coast Central American nation with a substantial tuna industry centred on the port of Puntarenas. The waters off the country yield yellowfin and skipjack, and the canneries at El Roble pack thousands of tonnes a year. Sardimar, founded in 1975 and now part of Alimentos ProSalud, is the leading name, packing tuna in oil, water, and with vegetables for the domestic and export markets.
