Western Cape

The southwestern coast of South Africa, where the cold Benguela current drives one of the southern hemisphere's great pelagic fisheries. Ports along the coast, including St Helena Bay, built the country's pilchard (sardine) and snoek canning industry. South African producers pack pilchards in tomato sauce, a national staple, alongside snoek and mackerel.
