Founded in 1957 in Ishinomaki, on Japan's Sanriku coast, Kinoya hand-packs mackerel, salmon, sardine and tuna landed at the local port and canned the same day, never frozen. The 2011 tsunami destroyed the factory entirely; volunteers dug thousands of surviving tins from the debris and the proceeds funded the town's rebuilding.
