Olhão

A working fishing town on the Algarve's Ria Formosa lagoon, and one of the most important canning centres of southern Portugal. Olhão's factories grew on the rich tuna and sardine fisheries of the Algarve coast, and the town retains a strong industrial fishing identity. Producers including Conservas Santos, Conserveira do Sul, and Freitas Mar pack tuna, sardines, and mackerel, often in the spiced and piri-piri styles characteristic of the south.
