Lombardy

A landlocked northern region that, despite its distance from the sea, hosts the largest tuna cannery in Europe. The town of Cermenate, in the province of Como, has been the production heart of Rio Mare since the 1950s, processing millions of cans of tuna daily from fish landed worldwide. Mareblu is also based in the region. Lombardy represents the industrial, modern face of Italian canned fish, as opposed to the artisanal coastal traditions of the south.
