Sweden's rugged west coast above Gothenburg, the heart of the country's herring tradition for over four centuries. The island of Klädesholmen has been curing and pickling herring since the 1500s, and the remaining family producers there have united under the Klädesholmen name to carry the craft forward. The cold Skagerrak waters and the great historic herring runs built the region's preserving economy. Abba, one of Sweden's best-known seafood brands, also has its roots on this coast. Pickled and matjes herring in many cures are the defining products.
