PORTUGAL
Figueira da Foz
A canning town at the mouth of the Mondego River on Portugal's central coast, historically one of the country's significant sardine and fishing ports. The local industry grew around the abundant catches of the Beira Litoral coast, and canneries here helped supply both domestic and export markets through the twentieth century. Producers including Briosa Gourmet, Cofisa, and Dama carry the tradition, packing sardines, mackerel, and tuna. The surrounding central coast remains an active fishing region.
