H-E-B began in 1905, when Florence Butt opened a grocery on the ground floor of her family's home in Kerrville, Texas.
Her son Howard Edward Butt converted the credit-and-delivery shop into a cash-and-carry self-service store in 1922, the model that grew into the Texas chain still run by the Butt family today.
