Aldi

Aldi grew out of a corner grocery their mother ran in Essen, Germany, which brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht took over in 1946 and expanded to thirteen stores within four years.

A 1960 dispute between the brothers, reportedly over whether to stock cigarettes, split the business into the separately run Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud, the two companies still operating under the Aldi name adopted in 1962, short for Albrecht Diskont.
