Kroger
Kroger traces to 1883, when 23-year-old Bernard Kroger, the son of German immigrants, put his life savings of 372 dollars into a grocery store at 66 Pearl Street in downtown Cincinnati.
He ran it on the motto "be particular, never sell anything you would not want yourself," and the chain went on to become the first American grocer to run its own bakeries.
