Sardines Portugaises à la tomate en huile d'olive

Portuguese sardines packed under a cooked tomato sauce and olive oil, a softer, sweeter tin than a plain oil pack, with the tomato taking the edge off the sardine's brine rather than masking it. It is built as a pantry standby, the kind of tin meant to turn into a fast plate. Toss it warm through pasta so the tomato sauce becomes the dressing.
