Rice
The catch-all warm base. 3,407 tins in stock take to it.
When a tin wants a warm base under it, rice is the simplest one, and almost any tin takes to it. Cook a pot, tip the fish pieces or mash and its oil over the top, and the packing liquid becomes the sauce. Plain steamed rice is never wrong, but match it where it helps: a tomato rice under a tomato tin, a lemony rice under a clean oil pack, cold rice-salad style under a vinegary escabeche. Some 2,949 of the sauced tins were all but made for it. One pot is all that stands between a snack and a full meal.
The move
Cook some rice, tip the tin and all its oil over the top.
