Grøndals

Martin Bergholdt Grøndal learned tinned fish from his grandfather in a Copenhagen allotment, and in 2014, on a sail across the Atlantic that put him ashore in the Azores, he found the pole-caught skipjack packed by the Santa Catarina cannery and carried fifty tins home in his luggage.

He talked his way into a Nordic distribution contract by email and Skype, started Grøndals with four hundred tins in a Nørrebro basement, and now supplies more than two hundred delicatessens and specialist shops across Denmark. The house sells its own labelled conserves alongside the Azorean tuna, argues its sustainability case in public, and opened a warehouse of its own at Svendborg in February 2026.
