The Fish Society

Alistair Blair was a London journalist when he sent out the first Fish Society price list in 1994, a single laser-printed page, and he fulfilled the early orders between writing assignments on one delivery day every three months.

He built the business at Guildford, forty miles from the sea and a hundred miles from the nearest fishing port, for the plain reason that it was where he lived. Everything is sold frozen, on the house argument that fish frozen within days of landing beats fish held chilled for a week, and the company says its website was the first in Britain built to retail fish. Blair wrote his last magazine column in 2012 and now chairs the firm, which despatches over a thousand orders a week and carries a tinned and preserved range alongside the frozen catalogue.
